By Chris J Marentis

Green jobs have been in the news a lot lately. It’s no secret that more companies are becoming environmentally conscious. As a result, there’s a focus on creating products and services that help instead of harm the environment. People are needed to fill these newly-created green job positions. Confused about how to begin your green job search? Here are some tips to get you started.

Tip 1. Discover Your Passion

People seek green-collar jobs because they’re passionate about protecting the environment. So the first step to finding the green job of your dreams is knowing what you want to do.

If you dream of working outdoors growing organic crops, you wouldn’t enjoy making energy efficient heating systems. Both are green jobs, but very different in nature. This is why it’s important to get clear about the type of work you want.

Tip 2. Study the Industry

The green-collar sector is relatively new. You need to learn all you can about the industry before you get involved. Just like with any other job search, employers won’t hire just anybody. Yes, there are more green jobs than people to fill them, but that doesn’t let you off the hook. Don’t start your green job search before you know the skills and experience companies are seeking.

Tip 3. Market Yourself to the Right People

If you’re frightened by the thought of networking, then your green job search will come to a screeching halt. You have to go to the source to learn about the best green jobs available.

The best jobs are rarely advertised online or in the newspaper. You should check those places as well, but the best jobs are often given to those who go out and find them.

You have to identify the companies that are looking for what you have to offer. Also research to discover which companies are “green” companies.

Once you have your list, it’s time to contact the decision makers. This doesn’t mean mail your resume to human resources. Instead, contact the person who makes hiring decisions. And guess what? It’s definitely not anyone in human resources.

Tip 4. Learn More about Finding a Green-Collar Job

Many of the techniques used for finding blue-collar and white-collar jobs won’t work for the green-collar sector. As of now, there isn’t much information available on how to conduct a green job search. The Complete Green Job Guide was created to fill this void. If you’re in the market for a green job, this book is the first place to start. Learn more about it now by visiting (http://www.thecompletegreenjobguide.com).

Trying to be all things to all people is a recipe for failure. This is especially true when it comes to your green career search. You might want any green-collar job you can find, but thinking like that will hinder your efforts. The last thing you want is to look like a generalist. Here’s how to avoid the “jack of all trades but master of none” syndrome.

Highlight Your Expertise

There’s a time and a place for generalists, but they often get lost in the crowd. Hiring officials always get excited about potential employees who can solve specific problems. Some people make the mistake of thinking green-collar jobs are easy to get. The truth is you still need to offer something the company needs and wants.

The best way to prove you’re right for the job is to show how your skills benefit the company. This requires a bit of work on your part. For example, let’s say you’re a lawyer interested in working for a firm that specializes in environmental cases. You’ve spent hours studying cases and learning all you can about environmental law.

Environmental cases include everything from protecting the public from pesticides to dealing with companies that create excessive pollution. You’ll be able to easily identify law firms that place a priority on these types of cases. After some research, you will find firms that handle the kinds of cases you care about.

You’ll then be able to show how passionate and knowledgeable you are about environmental law and the environment in general. Your enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills will put you light-years ahead of someone who just wants to practice law. You can apply this strategy to any green career search. The more specific you are, the better you look to potential employers.

Hone Your Skills

If you need more training, then go out and get it. Do what you can to make your credentials more attractive. Can you take additional classes or get some sort of certification? Get any training that proves you’re serious about your profession.

Perhaps you’re a student or professional interested in switching careers. Now’s the time to get educated about your chosen green profession. Take steps to become an expert.

What to do Next

Get more help with your green career search by reading The Complete Green Job Guide. It has everything you need to know about getting a green-collar job. Visit (http://www.thecompletegreenjobguide.com) now for more information.

By Elliot Mizroch

Jobs in the green-collar sector are on the rise. The growing demand for less dependence on foreign oil combined with the need for a cleaner planet guarantees green industry growth. There will be an emphasis on engineering and new green technologies. However, there will also be a demand for jobs in sales, teaching, and construction.

If you’ll soon be starting a green job search, here are some industries expected to quickly grow.

Agriculture and Horticulture. Are you interested in plants, food, or animals? This sector deals with environmentally friendly plant and animal production. Occupations that fit into this category include organic farming and community gardeners.

Alternative Forms of Transportation. If you’re tired of breathing in air that’s filled with exhaust fumes, you might find this sector interesting. This explores the creation and use of transportation methods not powered by non-renewable energy sources. People who work in this sector do everything from working on electric cars to urban planning.

Waste Management and Recycling. Your garbage collector is a green worker, and they probably don’t even know it. This sector involves collecting, transporting, or disposing of waste materials. There are a number of occupations that fit into this category, including trash collector and waste treatment operator.

Green Building. This is construction work with a purpose. Green builders use environmentally friendly resources and methods for their buildings. Architects, construction workers, and designers fit into the green building category.

You’ll notice that many of the growing green-collar occupations are actually “green” forms of blue-collar jobs. Because of this crossover, green jobs are sometimes not identified as such. If your green job search isn’t yielding many results, watch for jobs that fit into the green category even if they’re not officially “green”.

Don’t forget that all kinds of jobs fit into the green category. You don’t have to be installing solar panels or planting vegetables to be a green worker. A salesperson for a solar panel company is just as much of a green worker as the installer.

Your chances of finding a green job are good. Although demand is growing, there’s still a short supply of workers. Some people just aren’t aware of the green-collar sector. The success or failure of the green economy will depend heavily on the workforce. People need to know what’s available and have access to training.

Get help with your green job search. Get a copy of The Complete Green Job Guide today. You’ll get the help you need to begin your job search. Find out more now at http://www.thecompletegreenjobguide.com.

Green careers are on the rise. The green-collar movement got a serious boost from the Green Jobs Act of 2007 and the recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Both combined allocate millions of dollars for green-job training and research. It’s expected that more than 2 million jobs will result from the push towards a more ecologically-friendly environment.

Green job career opportunities can be found in just about any occupation. However, two occupations in dire need of workers includes:

Farming. Someone has to grow all those organic fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, America has fewer than 3 million farmers. And according to a Fast Company article, the average age for those farmers is 55-years old. America is ready for the next generation of farmers. However, it’s no longer enough to be a simple farmer. Modern farmers need to be business savvy, and know how to run a business just as well as a farm. Training is available at various schools around the country, including the University of Vermont, University of Oklahoma, and Evergreen State College.

Urban Planning. Do you want to make your city a “green city”? Then consider becoming an urban planner. You’ll spend your time finding ways to make city life more environmentally friendly.Urban planning involves creating an efficient and convenient mass transit system. Encouraging citizens to shun cars in favor of walking, biking, or mass transit is an urban planning issue. One of the biggest problems facing cities everywhere is the accumulation of trash on the streets and in landfills. Urban planners are tasked with finding solutions to such situations. The good thing about this career is it’s slightly more secure than most green jobs. This sector is expected to quickly grow by more than 15 percent. Most of the positions are in local government offices. As a result, urban planning can offer a more stable job situation.

You’re already familiar with the terms “blue-collar jobs” and “white-collar jobs”. Now there’s a new kid on the block known as “green-collar”. Green-collar jobs center around environmentally friendly services and products. More than ever before people are concerned with the condition of the planet. As a result, good green jobs are being created every single day.

Taking Responsibility for the Environment

Why have green jobs become popular? It’s because something must be done to preserve the environment. Playtime is over. The time to work towards reducing waste and pollution is now. The planet can’t continue to take abuse and sustain human life simultaneously. The green-collar sector has been created to achieve the goal of creating a cleaner planet.

Jobs in this sector are referred to as “green jobs”. This term isn’t widely-known, but it will become familiar as more companies put an emphasis on “going green”. This
shift is already in motion.

Dell Computers got involved by creating a “green” PC that uses 70 percent less power than a typical computer. Also, President Obama plans to create 5 million green jobs during the years to come. There’s no doubt the green sector is rapidly growing. Not only is that good news for the environment, but it’s good news for the unemployed and those looking for a career change.

How do you recognize a good green job? There are three requirements:

Pay a decent wage.

Have room for advancement.

Reduce waste and pollution.

By now you’re probably asking yourself, what fields fall into this category? Just about any job fits. What makes the difference between white-collar, blue-collar, and green-collar is how the job is performed and its result. You can find green jobs in just about any
profession.

For example:

Law. There are lawyers and advocates who specialize in green cases. When a pesticide company contaminates a lake or a species is endangered because of construction, these green-collar jobs in the legal field come to the rescue.

Construction. Energy-efficient buildings are created by “green builders”. These builders are concerned with environmentally conscious methods and materials. There’s a huge demand for green builders, and its one of the fastest growing occupations in the green-collar sector.

Join the Green-Collar Revolution

One thing is certain, there are more green jobs than workers available. The sector is so new until the supply of workers hasn’t kept pace. As demand grows, more training programs and jobs will become available.

Do you want a job that pays well and helps protect the environment? Learn all you need to know about good green jobs by reading The Complete Green Job Guide. Visit (http://www.thecompletegreenjobguide.com) now for more information.

Do you want a traditional job within the green-collar sector? Perhaps you’re a salesperson with no desire to become a solar panel installer. Maybe you’re a financial analyst who wants to provide counsel to green businesses. You’re in luck because green-collar workers aren’t limited to new emerging green companies. You can work for an established business and fill the green-collar role.

Everyone is Going Green

There are plenty of well-established companies in the green movement. Support for the green-economy is high, and companies realize its in their best interest to get involved. Here are a few well-known companies that offer green jobs:

Dell

Coca Cola Company

General Electric

Bank of America

General Motors

Staples

Finding a Green Job in a Non-Green Industry

The first step is to make a list of places where you’d like to work. After you have your list, research the companies online. Most companies have websites that provide useful information for job seekers. So put on your detective hat and see if you can find a green trail.

You can get clues from:

The annual report. This will give you an idea about their environmental activities. Have they invested in or created any green programs? Is there any mention of green job training? Have they made an effort to make their products or services “green”? Put on your thinking cap and look for signs that the company is active in the green movement.

Press releases. Going green is a big deal. The larger the company, the more newsworthy the story. Most companies will release a statement when they develop a new program, product, or service that’s environmentally friendly. You can form a clear picture of the company just be reading a few press releases.

You should also check to see what others say about the company. Is it a good place to work? Are the workers treated well? Do they provide good benefits? Answer these questions before making your final decision. Just because a company looks good on paper doesn’t mean its a good place to work. Find out what current and former employees have to say.

Another thing you should do is read a copy of The Complete Green Job Guide. This guide is full of helpful tips and information to help you become a green-collar worker. Visit (http://www.thecompletegreenjobguide.com) now to learn more about the book.
